A Day Exploring Oslo: Art, Architecture, and the Fjord
Before heading to Denmark for a conference, I scheduled a solo day in Oslo to acclimate to the time zone. What I discovered was a city where art and urban life are beautifully intermingled - sculptures on every corner, world-class architecture, and stunning fjord views.
I took a trip to Denmark for a conference, but before that I scheduled a day in Oslo to get acclimated to the time zone. Unfortunately my friend couldn't join me, but I made the most of the time exploring the city.
What struck me most about Oslo is how art and the city are this intermingled thing. Sculptures appear around every corner - some monumental, some whimsical, all of them adding character to the urban landscape.
The Waterfront and Opera House
The Oslo Opera House is a masterpiece of modern architecture. Its sloping white marble roof invites visitors to walk up to the top, where you're rewarded with panoramic views of the city and fjord. The glass facade reflects the sky and water, creating ever-changing visual effects.

The MUNCH Museum
The new MUNCH museum is an architectural statement in its own right - a leaning tower of perforated aluminum panels that catches the light differently throughout the day. The rooftop bar offers incredible views back toward the Opera House and the harbor.

Exploring the Fjord by Ferry
One of the highlights was taking a ferry through the Oslo Fjord. The journey reveals a different side of the city - small islands with traditional Norwegian houses, lighthouses perched on tiny outcrops, and wildlife everywhere.

Sculptures Everywhere
Oslo is a city of public art. From the giant rose at Aker Brygge to chrome humanoid figures, from the FDR memorial to dramatic bronzes at City Hall - sculpture is woven into the fabric of daily life here.

From Royal Palace to Evening Lights
The day began at Karl Johans gate, the main street leading to the Royal Palace, and ended with the city lights illuminating the cobblestones. Even on a solo day trip, Oslo offered more than enough to explore.

On Photography
I really enjoyed having my camera with me and trying to frame the most interesting views. I'm still amazed at the unique ways both my Sony a6700 and my iPhone 16 Pro can capture a moment - each has its strengths, and together they let me document everything from the dramatic harbor light to intimate street scenes.
Sometimes the best trips are the unexpected ones. A solo day in an unfamiliar city, with nothing but a camera and curiosity.
